NY SCHOLASTIC CHESS CLUB
We are excited to announce that for the upcoming school year the children of P.S. 452 are invited to NY Scholastic Chess Club's afterschool program that takes place in the Anderson school. In addition to the afterschool program, NYSCC will be running chess tournaments and chess camps. These are all open to the families of P.S. 452.
NYSCC is a company founded by Ivan Dirkx who has been teaching chess in New York City for 11 years and has been working with P.S. 452 and Anderson for the past 3 years. In that time we have seen the program nearly triple in size with our students being some of the best chess players not only in the city but nationally as well.
We know that one of the challenges last year was a lack of communication between parents and teachers. This year all chess teachers are to fill out a progress report during and at the end of each afterschool program for each child so the parents get a better sense of how their child is progressing. Our number one goal is to make sure the children have fun and to learn how to play chess.
We are currently in the process of creating and updating the chess page, which will be on the Anderson school website, to include all the necessary information regarding afterschool, camps and tournaments. In the meantime, registration for the fall afterschool chess program is up and running.
Space is limited so to ensure a spot for the fall semester please register sooner rather than later. The link to the registration:

Deadline extended for city STEM summer program for 2nd graders! Read below and then click for more details
NYC Summer STEM 2015 is a free program designed to provide current 2nd, 7th, and 10th graders with the opportunity to participate in a innovative, engaging, and fun summer learning program designed specifically around science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program also includes other enrichment opportunities, such as arts and physical activity.
There are two sites in each borough, one for the elementary program and one for the middle and high school students. To get more information on the program and how to apply, please visit: http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/Science/NYCSummerSTEM . We highly encourage parents to complete an online application using a computer or mobile phone. Paper applications take a longer time to process. This video also provides more information about the program and application.
Children in this free summer workshop will experience the same high-energy and engaging dance classes provided in NDI's award-winning In-School Program, which currently serves 6,000 children in schools throughout NYC. A team of NDI Master Teachers and Musicians, assisted by professional dancers training in NDI's unique pedagogy, will take children on a thrilling, creative journey culminating in performance. In this joyfully rigorous environment, students will master fundamentals of dance and original choreography. The workshop will take place at the state-of-the-art NDI Center in Harlem. No prior dance experience is necessary.

PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: BOOK CLUB LEADER
Volunteers needed for an upcoming PS 452 book club for 4th & 5th grade in 2015-2016
We are looking for two parents who have time right after school for 45 minutes, from October to May, to lead an enriched book discussion group with two PS 452 staff. Participating students read selections from classic children’s literature and works of contemporary fiction. Please contact Sharon Lustig, PS 452 Parent Coordinator, at email@example.com if you are interested and for additional details.
Aaron Barksdale, our Art Student Teacher's brought PS 452 student artwork to an exhibition at the Macy Art Gallery at Teacher's College
The exhibit included papier-mâché letter sculptures and printmaking with stamps by kindergartners. There were also weaving projects from the second grade and self-portraits by fourth graders. The students got to see their works hung in a gallery setting along with student work from other local schools. There was a reception on Sunday, May 17th, that many of the students and their families attended. It was really impressive and the kids were definitely excited about it.
Mr Watson's fearless Recorder Karate Third Graders!
Third grader's recorder culmination included student's teaching their parents how to play the recorder and even coaching them on audition tips and grading them! Students created games, presentations and even led a graduation ceremony for parents who completed all the stations successfully! Thank you Mr Watson for helping our kids become not just strong musicians but great teachers too!
The Teacher Parent Workshop Evening was really fantastic

Pro Athletes Vist PS 452! (And Mr. O'Reilly interviewed on the news!)
Mr O'Reilly co-ordinated a great event for 4th grade and K-225 runners! Our school hosted several professional runners that are in town for the NYC half marathon. They are visiting because of our participation in the Mighty Milers program, and it just so happens that their visit correlated with K-225's physical education period on Thursday.
